On July 12, 2006, witnesses saw 30-year-old Vernon Smith and two unknown adult black males parked in the driveway of a vacant house on New York Avenue in Fort Myers. The subjects got out of the car and during an argument, the two male subjects chased Smith behind the house and fatally shot him. The two male subjects fled the area on foot.

The body of a North Fort Myers man was found on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 8:18 a.m. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a body found in a wooded area located north of Brooks Road and on the east side of Business 41 (N Tamiami Trl). The victim was identified as 48-year-old Tony Churchwell.
